Square Card Reader Patent Print
Sam Wen, October 13, 2010.
Square, Inc. is a financial services, merchant services aggregator and mobile payment company based in San Francisco, California. The company markets several software and hardware payments products, including Square Register and Square Reader, and has expanded into small business services such as Square Capital, a financing program, and Square Payroll.
The company was founded in 2009 by Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey and launched its first app and service in 2010. It has been traded as a public company on the New York Stock Exchange since November 2015 with the ticker symbol SQ.
Titled 'Systems and Methods for Decoding Card Swiping Signals', this patent was granted by the USPTO in July 2012. It proposes a new approach to financial transactions which are carried out by swiping a magnetic stripe card through a card reader connected to a mobile device. This tiny portable device has revolutionised the SME sector and allowed thousands of vendors to collect card payments. Sometimes smaller really is better.
