Nintendo 64® Patent Print
"Video Game System"
Shigeru Miyamoto, September 24, 2002.
The Nintendo 64 (Japanese: ニンテンドウ64) is Nintendo's third home video game console for the international market. Named for its 64-bitcentral processing unit, it was released in 1996. It is the industry's last major home console to use the cartridge as its primary storage format. The patent is titled "Video game system and method with enhanced three-dimensional character and background control due to environmental conditions".
In effect, the video game methodology of this patent was the first to incorporate an open level environment for all courses which have previously been completed, a novel approach at the time. This was best seen in the flagship title "Super Mario 64". If you look closely at this patent design, you can even see the schema for mario traversing from the "Castle First Floor" onwards!
