Smith & Wesson Model 1® Patent Print

"Improvements in Metallic Cartridges"

HORACE SMITH and DANIEL B. Wesson, April 17, 1860.

The Smith & Wesson Model 1 is a revolver that was first introduced in 1857 by the American firearms manufacturer Smith & Wesson. It was the company's first commercially successful revolver and it played an important role in the history of firearms.

The Model 1 was designed by Smith & Wesson's co-founder, Daniel B. Wesson, and it was chambered in .22 Short rimfire. The revolver had a seven-round cylinder and a single-action mechanism, which meant that the user had to manually cock the hammer before each shot.

The Model 1 was an immediate success and it quickly became one of the most popular handguns of its time. It was widely used for personal protection and it was also a popular choice among law enforcement officers.

In 1860, Smith & Wesson introduced an improved version of the Model 1, known as the Model 1 Second Issue. This version featured a slightly larger frame and a fluted cylinder. The Model 1 Second Issue was also chambered in .22 Short, but it could also fire .22 Long cartridges.

In 1868, Smith & Wesson introduced the Model 1 Third Issue, which was the final version of the Model 1. This version featured a shorter cylinder and a redesigned grip. It was also chambered in .22 Short, but it could also fire .22 Long and .32 Rimfire cartridges.

The Smith & Wesson Model 1 was a groundbreaking handgun that helped establish Smith & Wesson as one of the premier firearms manufacturers in the world. It was also a popular handgun among gun enthusiasts and collectors, and it remains a sought-after firearm today.
