The History

"Controller Unit"

Teiyu Goto et al, May 8, 1995.

The Playstation Controller was the first gamepad released by Sony Computer Entertainment for its Playstation video game console. The original version was released alongside the Playstation on December 3, 1994.

Using the simple geometric shapes of a green triangle, a red circle, a blue cross, and a pink square (Triangle, Circle, X, Square) to label its action buttons rather than traditionally used letters or numbers, the Playstation Controller established a trademark which would be incorporated heavily into the Playstation brand.

The inventor of the patent, Teiyu Goto had to battle with management who thought the symbols were confusing. This was the design that he wanted though with the red circle and blue cross representing 'yes' or 'no' decision making. The green triangle represented a viewpoint and the pink square represented a menu.

The Playstation Controller also added a second pair of shoulder buttons for the middle fingers. This was developed to enhance the 3D gameplay for which the Playstation became famous. The patent design captures all these intricacies in great detail and highlights the ascetic beauty of the product.
