Electronic Calculator Patent Print

"CALCULATOR"

Kilby et al., December 21, 1972.

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) is an American technology company that designs and manufactures semiconductors, which it sells to electronics designers and manufacturers globally. TI's headquarters are in Dallas, Texas, United States.

Jack Kilby (the named inventor on this patent) was an employee at TI's Central Research Labs. He invented the integrated circuit in 1958 and successfully demonstrated the world's first working integrated circuit on September 12, 1958.

The patent titled 'Miniature Electronic Calculator' was filed on the 21st of December, 1972. The product is described as a "Binary-coded decimal electronic calculator capable of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with some degree of automatic decimal point placement to provide a visual display of answers of up to 12 decimal digits." The foundation of this invention was the integrated circuit which Kirby had helped invent 14 years earlier.

In 1969, Kilby was awarded the National Medal of Science, and in 1982 he was inducted into the National Inventor's Hall of Fame. Kilby also won the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics for his part of the invention of the integrated circuit. In 2008, TI named its new development laboratory "Kilby Labs" after Jack Kilby.

Next time you pick up a calculator, remember TI and Kirby who kindly helped us evolve past the abacus! We believe this patent print is a fitting tribute to a true inventor and Nobel Laureate.
