"GoPro"

Nicholas Woodman, February 11, 2004.

GoPro, Inc is an American technology company founded in 2002 by Nick Woodman. It manufactures eponymous action cameras and develops its own mobile apps and video-editing software. The company was started by Woodman after a surfing trip to Australia. He was hoping to capture quality action photos but couldn't because he wasn't able to get close enough to the surf to take quality pictures with his amateur equipment. Driven by this desire for a camera system that could capture the professional angles, he called the product the 'GoPro'.

Woodman raised a portion of his initial capital by selling bead and shell belts for under US $20 from his VW van and, later, fashionable camera straps. Despite these humble beginnings, GoPro, Inc went public in 2014. At the IPO price the company was valued at $2.95 billion.

The patent titled 'Harnessing System for Attaching Camera to User' was filed on the 11th of February, 2004. It clearly captures the vision that Woodman had to create an adjustable camera housing which anyone could use to take professional action photos. The patent was granted in October 2005.
