"eHarmony"

Buckwalter et al, August 10, 2000.

eHarmony is an online dating website designed specifically to match couples with each other for long-term relationships. The approach used by eHarmony is somewhat unique in that it uses a 258 question application form to boost potential match rates.

eHarmony was founded by Neil Clark Warren, a psychologist and author of relationship advice books, along with Greg Forgatch, Warren's son-in-law. In the late 1990s, Warren decided to test his theory that certain characteristics can predict compatibility and lead to more satisfying relationships. After three years of research in collaboration with Galen Buckwalter, Warren developed a model of compatibility that is now the basis of the company’s matching system which is captured in this print.

This patent titled 'Method and System for Identifying People who are likely to have a Successful Relationship' was filed on the 10th of August, 2000. In the patent, it is claimed that 'human relationships depends on complex interactions between a large number of variables including, but not limited to, personality, socioeconomic status, religion, appearance, ethnic background, energy level, education, interests and appearance'. eHarmony's improvement on the prior art of matching services to account for all these variables in a more systematic way thereby increasing the overall match rates.

Although the schema set out in the print seems a little formulaic to find 'true love', you can't argue with the stat that in 2010, eHarmony accounted for a whopping 2% of all new marriages in the US. Who says that romance can't be deconstructed, formalised and patented into an invention!
